There are two important pieces
to WPNJ's Watershed Awareness Campaign. The first is the posting of our
Watershed Identification Signs on state roads and
highways. The purpose of posting watershed signs is to
identify the boundaries of the different watershed regions in
New Jersey. With this, it is our hope that people will
begin to identify with the word "watershed" and
start asking questions about what watersheds are and
why they are important.
The posting of these signs opened
up an opportunity for WPNJ to develop an advertising campaign
to answer watershed questions that the presence
of the signs developed. In 2001, WPNJ was awarded a grant
by the NJ Department of Environmental Protection to complete
the identification sign project that started in 1998 and to
develop a newspaper ad campaign to teach people about what a
watershed is and why it they are important to protect.
