A nationally recognized scientific staff, well equipped modern laboratories and field stations situated at key locations combine to make the Institute of Marine and Coastal Sciences (IMCS) a focal point for providing guidance to state, federal and local agencies which govern the use of New Jersey’s valuable coastal zone. IMCS provides educational opportunities for students at all school levels including the establishments of an undergraduate minor in marine science, development of a graduate program in physical oceanography, and professional development for K-12 teachers. Of equal importance are the educational opportunities, technical training, and programs provided by the Institute through the Jacques Cousteau National Estuarine Research Reserve. The Reserve encompasses the Mullica River-Great Bay estuary and serves as a field laboratory where the effects of both natural and human activity is monitored and studied. Reserve education programs serve many levels of interest, including local coastal decision-makers, K-12 teachers, students and recreational visitors to the region.
