For more than 20 years, the Youth Environmental Society (YES) has been providing environmental education and leadership programs for high school students in New Jersey. YES’s most recent effort, the Watershed Stewards Program, is a unique leadership training program that directly engages high school students in a community service project that improves their watershed. The students are provided with the necessary tools, resources and skills to assess and implement an action project of their choice through leadership seminars. In 1998, ten schools from the Whippany and Hackensack River Watersheds participated in the first phase of the Stewards Program. The next phase will link high schools with local corporations, governments, or other property owners to implement stewardship projects.
