The Hackensack Meadowlands Educational Consortium is a cooperative program between the Hackensack Meadowlands Development Commission’s Environmental Center and eight school districts from Bergen and Hudson Counties. The Consortium uses the Hackensack River, its tributaries, and the surrounding salt marshes as a living laboratory for local students. The Consortium uses Interactive Television and an interdisciplinary program to investigate the environmental, cultural and historical impacts on the water quality in the Hackensack River Watershed. Students collect water quality data such as salinity, dissolved oxygen, pH, nitrates, temperature and turbidity. As part of this program, the Consortium offers teacher workshops to provide educators with information on environmental topics, such as water quality and map reading. The Consortium is also active in the community through both education and habitat restoration projects. The Hackensack Meadowlands Education Consortium provides public education and encourages the community to move toward positive changes in water, air and land quality. The Consortium hopes to enhance student awareness and increase public appreciation of the many values of watersheds and water quality. Please call for field trip offerings and teacher training opportunities.
