Founded in 1990, Baykeeper is the citizen environmental steward and watchdog for the Hudson-Raritan Estuary with the goal of protecting and restoring the ecological integrity of the Hudson Raritan Estuary and its tributaries and watersheds. Baykeeper is a program of the American Littoral Society, a research and advocacy organization for out nation’s coasts. While working to find solutions to environmental problems in the Estuary, Baykeeper draws public attention to issues that affect the future of the ecosystem and acts as a citizen conservation advocate both on the waterways and the shores. Baykeeper provides services to the community such as monitoring the waters to identify sources of pollution and alerting environmental agencies of pollution violators. The Baykeeper is also involved in habitat preservation and restoration projects designed to improve the health of the estuary. The Baykeeper provides educational materials to local citizens, meets with community groups, and gives presentations at local schools and community group meetings. Through these efforts, the Baykeeper helps to stop polluters, monitor water quality and land use, and emphasize the Estuary’s ecological productivity and value as a recreational and cultural resource.
