The main goal of the Pequannock River coalition (PRC) is the preservation of the Pequannock River as a water supply and a natural, recreational and aesthetic resource. The PRC was founded in 1995 in response to a fish kill which resulted from a low water flow release from the Newark reservoirs. The PRC is currently involved in community awareness activities, such as biannual river cleanups, an annual poster contest for schools within the watershed, a storm drain stenciling program and installing Wood Duck boxes. The PRC has also installed temperature monitoring devices in several locations to ensure that flows controlled by Newark are adequate to support trout populations. The Coalition has also published a stream care guide that was mailed to landowners with property along the Pequannock River and select tributaries.
