The mission of the Stony Brook Millstone Watershed Association (SBMWA) is to enhance the quality of the natural environment in the area drained by Stony Brook and the Millstone River. The Association addresses key issues affecting water quality and land use, educates area residents about ecology of the natural environment, and preserves open space by maintaining an 825 acre nature reserve and organic farm. A diverse array of programs support this mission and include: Environmental advocacy, Project Turtle (storm drain stenciling), water quality monitoring by citizen volunteers (stream walking, biological and chemical monitoring), Assessment of Municipal Master Plans and ordinances (including the development of model ordinance packages for Stream corridors, steep slopes, wellhead protection areas and similar ecological features), River Friendly programs to improve stewardship by businesses, citizens and major landowner groups, Geographic Information System (GIS) mapping, support for community groups in central New Jersey through the Natural Lands Network, and support for watershed groups throughout the state through the Watershed Institute. The Association also provides more than 400 environmental education programs for the public, organized groups, teachers and schools. This includes programs at the nature reserve and field trips that cover many topics, such as How Clean is your Stream? And Exploring a Pond. Teacher education workshops include Aquatic Wild, Project WET, and Wonders of Wetlands.
