The Federation of Gloucester County Watersheds is a non-profit, volunteer organization whose primary mission is to promote the preservation and protection of water resources within Gloucester County through public education and advocacy on issues of environmental stewardship and land protection. There are five local watershed associations (WA) under the Federation umbrella, which work together as one combined watershed association. They are the Great Egg Harbor River WA; the Raccoon / Repaupo Creek WA; the Oldman's Creek WA; the Upper Maurice River WA; and the Woodbury / Mantua Creeks WA.
We accomplish our mission through two major initiatives:
Education: Together we focus public attention on the value of our watersheds, promote greater understanding of their fragility and alert people to threats to their environmental health through newsletters, storm drain stenciling, a "Teachers Guide to Watersheds of Gloucester County" for direct assistance to the teachers of the county, co-sponsorship of the annual Gloucester County Waterfest, free environmental workshops, and production of other educational materials. The Association also provides public speakers on watershed issues and other environmental topics. The Federation published a new informational brochure detailing current programs and projects and issues quarterly newsletters on timely education issues.
Advocacy: We work to support water regulations with educational booths at the municipalities' community days, work with partners such as the South Jersey Land Trust on the preservation of land, and provide data and information during hearings such as on the New Jersey State Plan and other local watershed issues. The Federation is actively involved with the county on implementation of the new NJ Storm water Management regulations as they impact the municipalities of Gloucester County. It also partners with other clubs such as Gloucester County Nature Club in presenting speakers for events.
