Bayshore Discovery Project (BDP) was founded in 1988 to motivate people to take care of the history, culture and environment of New Jersey's Bayshore region through education, preservation and example. The restored 1928 oyster schooner, New Jersey's Official Tall Ship, A.J. MEERWALD sails as a hands-on classroom from various ports on the Delaware River and Bay, and New Jersey coastal waters. The MEERWALD hosts field trips for schools and other groups with a variety of learning stations, hands-on ecological activities, participation in schooner sailing and team building exercises. Shore-based activities at the Bivalve facility include wetlands walks, bayshore seining, and the Delaware Bay Museum. BDP produces Delaware Bay Days, a cultural, environmental, FUN festival the first weekend in June which generally attracts 10-15,000 people to the banks of the Maurice River. Also available is a speaker’s bureau which presents the historical uses of the bay, its present ecological status and its need for stewardship. BDP has a monthly e-newsletter, offers a monthly lecture series to the public, and presents an assembly program, classroom lessons and teacher workshops. The Project also maintains a database for watershed-wide communication in the Delaware Estuary.
